The World Football Challenge is an exhibition international club football competition featuring football clubs from Europe andNorth America, which has been held since the summer of 2009. There was no WFC in 2010, due to the 2010 FIFA World Cup.Chelsea F.C. are the reigning champions.
The 2011 World Football Challenge was held in July and August of 2011. It featured thirteen different squads meeting up in fourteen matches across the United States. The tournament format was considerably different than the 2009 event, due to the increase in number of teams. This is the first WFC event that MLS teams participated in.
The 2011 tournament increased in scale from the 2009 incantation, bringing in thirteen teams from seven different countries. All the teams are either a member of the UEFA or CONCACAF federations. The field is highlighted by English champion Manchester United F.C. and Spanish league champion and European champion Barcelona FC. Club America is the only team that will return from the 2009 competition.
This tournament for the first time also includes five teams from Major League Soccer, which is the top-flight league for the host countries, United States and Canada. As another first, there will be a game played outside the United States, at Vancouver, Canada's Empire Field.
North American clubs which have confirmed their participation for 2011 include Chicago Fire, Chivas Guadalajara, Club America, LA Galaxy, New England Revolution, Philadelphia Union, and Vancouver Whitecaps.
Four representatives from Europe's top leagues of England and Spain, all of whom won their country's blue ribbon competitions in the 2010-11 season will join the North American clubs, those being: European champions F.C. Barcelona, FA Cup winners Manchester City, Premier League champions Manchester United and Copa Del Rey winners Real Madrid.

Brief Match Preview
Qualcomm Stadium is the stage and Spanish giants Real Madrid and popular Mexican side Chivas de Guadalajara the protagonists as the two teams collide on Wednesday (11 pm ET, ESPN2, ESPN Deportes) in San Diego in the Herbalife World Football Challenge.
For Real Madrid, the match against Guadalajara will be the second in both the WFC and their preseason, following a 4-1 defeat of the LA Galaxy on Saturday. Their final match of their US tour is against the Philadelphia Union.
Chivas, meanwhile, end their preseason with their first match of the World Football Challenge. Their turnaround will be quick, though, as they kick off the Apertura 2011 campaign against Atlante on July 23.

CD Guadalajara: Héctor Reynoso
After helping Mexico to a Gold Cup win, Chivas' defensive stalwart will have the tough task of helping stop Real Madrid’s potent attack. Though strong in the air, it’s not uncommon to see him get blown on in man-to-man situations. He’ll also have to stay focused as he can sometimes lose concentration and commit costly errors.
Real Madrid: Kaká
The 2010-11 season wasn’t very kind for the midfield maestro. Shortly after returning from an eight-month layoff, Kaká was sidelined with a thigh injury. The knocks not only limited the former FIFA World Player of the Year's playing time but hampered his play. This season, the Brazil international will look to get back on track, and Real Madrid could use his vision and incisive passing — like his assist vs. the LA Galaxy — to defeat Guadalajara.
